Everyone knows about cavities and how they affect our teeth and oral health, but it's not often that you hear about gum disease. What is gum disease, what causes it, and how do you protect your teeth and gums from it?

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums that, if left untreated, can lead to many health issues such as tooth loss, heart disease, or even stroke.

There are four stages involved in the development of gum disease. Gingivitis is an early-stage gum disease that causes swollen, red gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. Gingivitis can be easily treated by properly maintaining your oral health with regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits.

Periodontitis, on the other hand, is a more serious form of gum disease that can erode the bone and tissue surrounding your teeth and can actually cause you to lose your teeth if not treated. At this stage, it also affects your bloodstream and immune system.

It is important to note that periodontal disease is not limited to the elderly, which is a common misconception. Anyone, including children and even pets, can get periodontitis.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is often the outcome of plaque that has been left to build up on your teeth, though it's certainly not the only cause. Gum disease can be caused by many factors and has been linked to illnesses that affect your immune system. Cancer, diabetes, and HIV can leave you at a higher risk for gum disease because your immune system is unable to fight bacterial infections that could lead to periodontal disease. In addition, smokers, pregnant women, and people with high-stress levels are also at a greater risk of gum disease.

Signs and symptoms of gum disease?

Signs and symptoms of gum disease are often easy to spot, but once you see any of these warning signs, it is important to make an appointment with your dentist right away to get proper treatment.

  • Chronic bad breath

  • Tender or bleeding gums

  • Red or swollen gums

  • Noticeable pain when chewing

  • Receding gums

  • Overly sensitive teeth

  • Tooth loss

How do you protect your teeth and gums from gum disease?

While regularly brushing your teeth is necessary to maintain good oral health, brushing alone isn't enough to prevent gum disease. Flossing and using mouthwash designed for gum health can be a major benefit to your daily oral routine. Scheduling regular cleaning sessions with your dentist is the most effective way to get rid of the bacteria that likes to settle in hard-to-reach areas around your gum line.
